PORT LINCOLN, Australia, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- South Australia residents Wednesday were forced to flee a bushfire that destroyed at least nine houses, officials said.
Firefighters in Port Lincoln, in South Australia's Lower Eyre Peninsula, contained the blaze but not until it had burned the State Emergency Services headquarters, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Officials with the Country Fire Service told the broadcaster it was also getting a grip on another bushfire burning near Kingston in South Australia's lower southeast.
Port Lincoln Mayor Peter Davis told the ABC there had been no reports of deaths in the area, but he was still worried.
"I shouldn't be surprised if there's been loss of life, particularly when it ignited ... . That was an explosive situation around three or four hours ago," he said.
