OTTAWA, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Canada's population grew by 133,500 people to 33,873,300 in the third quarter of 2009, Statistics Canada reported Friday from Ottawa.
Two-thirds of the increase, or 90,500 people, came from other countries, the agency said.
The strongest population growth occurred in western provinces, led by British Columbia, which saw 3,500 new residents from abroad and also other provinces.
Alberta's population grew by 0.44 percent in the third quarter, Saskatchewan by 0.47 percent and Manitoba by 0.35 percent, the agency said.
International migration led to Ontario gaining 0.38 percent and a gain in Quebec of 0.36 percent.
All four Atlantic provinces also experienced small gains.
Of the three northern territories, only the Northwest Territories had a population decrease in the third quarter of 0.45 percent, StatsCan said.
