LONDON, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Salil Shetty, director of the U.N. Millennium Campaign, will take over as secretary-general of Amnesty International, the rights organization said Monday.
Shetty, an Indian national, replaces Irene Khan, who will leave Dec. 31 after eight years as Amnesty International's secretary-general, the organization said in a release. Claudio Cordone, Amnesty International's senior director for Research and Regional Programs, will be interim secretary-general until Shetty assumes his duties.
"We are thrilled that Salil will be joining us and leading Amnesty International as we renew our fight to end injustice," said said Peter Pack, the chairman of Amnesty's International executive committee, the organization's governing body.
Shetty said he considered it a "privilege" to lead Amnesty International "at a time when the world needs human rights for all more than ever before."
