The earthquake was felt throughout Taiwan, but rattled the eastern part of the country the hardest, Xinhua, China's state-run news agency reported Sunday.

The quake struck at a depth of 29 miles, with an epicenter about 15 miles southeast of Hualien City in eastern Taiwan, and lasted between 20 and 30 seconds.

In Taipei, the quake caused four traffic accidents, temporarily halted high-speed rail service and reportedly collapsed a building in the county, authorities said.

Authorities in Beijing said they were ready to offer emergency assistance, if needed.

The quake was the strongest to hit Taiwan this year and aftershocks with a magnitude of 5 or higher could occur in coming days, Xinhua reported.
