Police pelted in parking lot melee

JERUSALEM, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Ultra-Orthodox Jews demonstrated Saturday against the operation of a Jerusalem parking lot on the Shabbat with some pelting police with rocks, police said.

At least one of the 150 haredi protesters was taken into custody for questioning in the assault of a police officer, The Jerusalem Post reported.

No injuries were reported, though a number of trash bins were moved into the streets and set on fire, the newspaper said. A police car was slightly damaged.

Protests have been a weekly occurrence since the Karta parking lot was opened during Shabbat, a period set aside for rest, last summer. Most have been peaceful in recent weeks.
