Little damage from strong quake in Taiwan

HUALIEN, Taiwan, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- A 6.8-magnitude earthquake rattled Taiwan on Saturday night.

While the quake was strong enough to cause significant damage over a wide area, there were no reports of serious injuries or destruction to property, Radio Taiwan International reported. Residents of the capital, Taipei, reported buildings shaking as the quake struck just after 9 p.m. local time.

High-speed rail service on the island was shut down after the quake.

The Central Weather Bureau pinpointed the epicenter off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan, about 15 miles southeast of Hualien City, the Central News Agency reported.

The earthquake, it said, struck at a depth of 29 miles and lasted for about 20 seconds.

The news agency said initial reports indicated some residents were injured by falling rocks.
