2 rockets fired from Gaza into Israel

SDEROT, Israel, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Militants in Gaza fired two Qassam rockets into Israel Wednesday, military officials say.

The Israeli military said the rockets fell into an open area in Sderot without causing any casualties, Haaretz reported.

The Israeli newspaper said rocket fire into Israel began Sunday with two missiles, one of which exploded in the Negev desert while the other hit Palestinian Authority territory.

Defense officials said the militants used a Russian-made S5K, which are typically seen in battle in Iran and Afghanistan -- the first time such weapons had been fired from Gaza.

Haaretz noted that Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza, announced last month it and other Gaza groups would stop firing rockets at Israeli towns to prevent retaliatory attacks.
