TEHRAN, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Iranian government radio reports protesters have been arrested for an alleged incident in which posters of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini were burned.
Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, died in 1989.
Voice of America says government opposition supporters deny anyone burned Khomeini's picture, saying the government is using the report as an excuse to clamp down on opponents.
A widely circulated video clip allegedly shows posters of Khomeini and current Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei being burned, VOA said. The government is using the clip to generate anger at protesters.
Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jaffari Dolatabadi says arrests have been made in the incident, and those at the scene of the alleged portrait-burning were "identified ... detained ... and arrested." The official Iranian news agency IRNA reported the prosecutor said "no mercy will be shown to those who insulted (Khomeini)."
