GAZA, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The Palestinian militant group Hamas warned Monday that kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit won't be released until its demands are met.
An official Hamas statement indicated the Gaza group won't compromise on a list of Israeli-held Palestinian prisoners to be released as part of the proposed exchange, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.
"These prisoners are a surety which we must redeem," the statement said. "We will not give up on them, no matter how long it takes. That is what we swore and that is our obligation, and we will not give up until every last prisoner is freed from the prisons of the occupation."
Haaretz said the statement also reiterated Hamas' support for the principle of resistance as a means to bring about an end to the Israeli occupation of Arab lands and establishing a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
It also reportedly added that Hamas was willing to reconcile with its rival Palestinian faction, Fatah, saying direct talks were the only way to achieve the goal and end the intra-Palestinian conflict.
