SUKHUMI, Georgia, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Incumbent President Sergei Bagapsh has been re-elected by voters in the former Georgian republic of Abkhazia, officials said Sunday.
The Abkhazian Central Election Commission told RIA Novosti preliminary results of the presidential elections indicated Bagapsh registered 59.4 percent of the votes, a total nearly four times the amount polled by second-place finisher Raul Khadzimba.
Igor Lyakin-Frolov, deputy director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's information and press department, issued a statement saying: "We can congratulate Sergei Bagapsh with the victory. We'll work with the president who has been elected by the Abkhaz people and we'll continue cooperation in all directions."
Russia is one of only three countries to recognize Abkhazia as an independent nation in the wake of the August 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
RIA Noviosti said Bagapsh, 60, has been president of the republic since January 2005 and pledged in his election campaign to focus on economic development and to continue strengthening political and economic ties with Russia.
