WARSAW, Poland, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Picketers gathered Saturday outside the Warsaw home of Wojciech Jaruzelski, the general who imposed martial law on Poland 28 years ago, authorities said.
The picketers read the names of casualties of the Polish Communist crackdown that began Dec. 13, 1981, and formally abolished July 22,1983, Polish Radio reported.
The event was part of ceremonies and religious masses held annually to remember the thousands of activists who were imprisoned and the estimated 100 people killed in an attempt to crush pro-Democracy protests.
Documents published this week by Poland's Institution of National Remembrance allegedly showed Jaruzelski requested Russian military assistance if the martial law triggered violence in Poland. Russia reportedly denied the request.
Jaruzelski, now 86, this week told Polish Radio the documents contained lies and nonsense.
