NICOSIA, Cyprus, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Three men are being questioned in connection with the theft of the remains of Tassos Papadopoulos, former president of Cyprus, state media says.
Official Cyprus media indicated that others may be questioned, while unconfirmed reports suggest the men are officers from Greece serving with the Cyprus National Guard, The Famagusta Gazette reported Saturday.
The Gazette said it appears a 550-pound granite slab that had covered the Papadopoulos' coffin was pushed aside, perhaps by as many as five people since no mechanical device seems to have been used.
The former president's family released a statement reading: "This unholy act by grave robbers, beyond the sorrow and anger it causes, cannot in any way bury the policy or write off the legacy left by Tassos Papadopoulos. Wherever his body may be now, his voice will be heard and endure in these difficult times for our national matter."
