Jail sought for circumcision gone wrong

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A Canadian judge has ordered a psychiatric evaluation of a Vancouver man who injured his 4-year-old son during an attempted circumcision.

The man who can only be identified by the initials DJW was at his sentencing hearing Thursday when British Columbia Supreme Court Madam Justice Marion Allan ordered a second evaluation of the man, saying the first one was full of errors.

The father was convicted of criminal negligence causing bodily harm as a result of the April 2007 incident in which the boy required hospitalization to complete the circumcision and be treated for infection, The (Vancouver) Province reported.

Court heard DJW also attempted circumcising himself with a razor blade in late 2004 that resulted in medical care for an infection.

Prosecutors are asking he be sentenced to 12- to 24 months for injuring his son while his defense attorney is asking for probation with counseling, the newspaper said.

After the second psychiatric evaluation, the sentencing hearing will resume March 25.
