NEW DELHI, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- An Indian naval ship prevented pirates in the Gulf of Aden from hijacking a tanker owned by Nordik Shipping, authorities said.
The naval ship Sunday responded to a distress call from the MT Nordik Spirit, which reported pirates were firing small arms at the crew, The Times of India reported Tuesday.
"The warship flew out its helicopters with marine commandos and on seeing it, the pirates gave up their hijack attempt," the Indian navy said in a release. No injuries were reported, Press TV said Tuesday.
The navy ship last year began patrolling the gulf against pirates, who have attacked hundreds of ships in the region in recent months.
