ATHENS, Greece, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Greek police and rioters clashed Monday near the University of Athens' administration building ahead of a scheduled protest rally, witnesses said.
The Athens News Agency said the demonstrators hurled rocks at police who were dispatched to guard the building a day after hundreds of young activists forced the doors open and vandalized it.
The Greek newspaper Kathimerini said the rector of the University of Athens, Christos Kittas, was hospitalized Sunday after rioters stormed into his office and he was struck on the head. Doctors told the newspaper Kittas was place in intensive care after suffering a mild heart attack.
Monday's clashes also came just ahead of a scheduled protest rally commemorating the first anniversary of the fatal police shooting of 15-year-old student Alexandros Grigoropoulos that led to widespread disturbances.
The news agency said that while police initially did not react to the rock throwing Monday, they eventually broke out tear gas and arrested some of the protesters.
