MEXICO CITY, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Two people have been arrested in Mexico City for the July killing of a teacher whose body was found in a car trunk in Toronto, authorities said.

Ana Laura Rodriguez Rayon, 19, and Juan Antonio Reyes Torres, 23, were being held in Mexico Saturday pending extradition to Canada, Toronto's Globe and Mail reported.

The suspects were arrested last month on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of Consuelo Valencia-Russo, an ex-girlfriend of Toronto City Councilor Cesar Palacio. Valencia-Russo and Palacio were the parents of one child, Nicholas.

"Nicholas and I, we are very relieved to learn of this arrest by Mexican authorities," Palacio told the Globe and Mail. "For those who had the honor of knowing Connie, it's an occasion of great relief, but also a moment of sadness."

The suspects lived in a unit in an apartment building belonging to Valencia-Russo's estranged husband. Valencia-Russo, who was asphyxiated, had once lived in the unit, said police, who declined to give a motive for the killing.
