NEW DELHI, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A school van plunged into a roadside pond in South India, killing nine children and a kindergarten teacher, police said.
The van was carrying 21 children but villagers in the Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu state, where the accident occurred Thursday, rescued 12 of them, The Times of India reported. The dead children were between the ages of 5 and 8 and the teacher was a 22-year-old woman.
Police said the van driver may have been talking on his cellphone and lost control of the vehicle. The van crashed into an embankment and plunged into the 18-foot-deep pond, the report said.
The driver, who was not hurt, tried to rescue the children but fled when the villagers arrived, police said.
