BALI, Indonesia, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Panicked passengers mistaking exhaust smoke for a burning aircraft during takeoff in Bali Thursday forced open emergency doors and jumped, officials say.

The plane was still on the runway but it was about a 15-foot leap for the several who jumped, with six rushed to hospitals with broken bones and other injuries, Britain's Daily Mail reported.

Airline authorities said the passengers spied exhaust smoke coming from their Batavia Air Boeing 737 aircraft as it taxied into position for takeoff for Surabaya in east Java and feared an explosion.
