Honduras re-affirms ouster of President

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Honduran congress reaffirms Zelaya ouster

Honduras will not restore ousted President Manuel Zelaya, who remains holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Honduran capital city of Tegucigalpa, officials say.

The Honduran congress voted Wednesday to reaffirm the June removal of Zelaya from office on charges of treason and abuse of power, The Miami Herald reported.

Zelaya left the country at gunpoint in June and was flown to Costa Rica. He secretly re-entered Honduras in September, the newspaper said.

In elections Sunday, voters chose former congressman Porfirio Lobo, a Zelaya opponent, as president. Zelaya supporters are refusing to accept the results as legitimate.

Zelaya still commands a following, analysts say, encouraged by worldwide skepticism over the election's legality.

Argentina and Brazil said they would not recognize the results because doing so would legitimize the coup.

The international community is divided, with some recognizing Lobo's legitimacy while others insist on Zelaya's reinstatement, calling his ouster and the subsequent election illegal.

"Our democracy and our peace is in the emergency waiting room in a very grave state,'' said Cesar Ham, a leftist congressman and presidential candidate. "What occurred on the 28th of June is a coup d'etat. You can't call it anything else.''
