Toll at 63 in Bangladesh ferry mishap

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Authorities said Monday the death toll from a capsized Bangladesh ferry boat has risen to 63 and will likely go higher.

Nazrul Islam, police chief of Bangladesh's Bhola district, said the Friday accident took the lives of 25 children, with about 20 to 25 people still missing and feared drowned, CNN reported.

Authorities say the boat was jammed with 2,000 people, about 500 more than capacity, as it was arriving at Bhola from the capital of Dhaka, bringing passengers home for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday. The boat capsized a passengers moved to one side of the ship to disembark, CNN said.

Islam told CNN many of the victims were trapped on the lower deck.
