Hajj generates $30B for Saudi Arabia

MECCA, Saudi Arabia, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia reaps at least $30 billion per year from hosting annual hajj pilgrimage to Muslim holy places, Arab media reported.

The Gulf News, based in the United Arab Emirates, said the $30 billion figure includes traveling, accommodation and living expenses, as well as cost of animals for sacrifices, RIA Novosti reported.

The report placed the average cost of sacrificed animals at $130 per pilgrim, while other expenses reportedly include gift-buying and expenses on telecommunications.

With annual average attendance of more than 2 million Muslims visiting Mecca, Medina and other holy places, the hajj makes up about 7 percent of Saudi Arabia's gross domestic product, Gulf News reportedly said.
