Inmates tunnel out of Afghan jail

FARAH, Afghanistan, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A dozen inmates escaped from a prison in western Afghanistan by digging a tunnel under the walls, police said Saturday.

While 13 prisoners got out of the prison in Farah, one was taken into custody, the Iranian broadcaster PRESS TV reported.

The fugitives reportedly include Taliban militants.

Investigators were trying to determine how the prisoners were able to dig a tunnel without detection and whether they had help from the outside.

Last summer, the Taliban orchestrated a mass escape from a jail in Kandahar. About 1,000 inmates fled after the front gates were bombed.
