KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- At least 73 people died when an improvised ferry sank in bad weather on a lake in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, officials say.
Dominique Lutula, head of the Red Cross in the country, said the death toll may rise because some bodies are believed still in the boat, which went down Wednesday on Lake Mai-Ndombe, the BBC reported. The 73 confirmed dead were found on the lake shores, and 270 were believed to have been on board.
"There are still some people missing. But we don't know how many because there was no ship's manifest," he said.
The boat was described as two logging barges tied together and was not a legal ferry authorized to carry passengers.
The lake, more than 70 miles long and up to 30 miles wide, is 250 miles northeast of Kinshasa.
