MOSCOW, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Russian authorities said a man detained for public intoxication killed one police officer and wounded another before committing suicide.

The Criminal Investigations Department at the Russian Prosecutor's Office said two men were detained for public intoxication Thursday night by a police patrol and were not searched before being loaded into a cruiser for transport to a police facility, ITAR-Tass reported Friday.

"After the detained man got into the vehicle, he took out a ... pistol and fired at the policemen sitting in front of him. The police driver died at the site from two gunshot wounds in the head, while the other policeman was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound in the head," sources with the department said.

"After that, the detained man shot himself in the head," they said.
