DELHI, India, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A court in New Delhi ruled authorities can revoke drivers licenses from motorists driving under the influence.
The court issued new guidelines allowing police to take licenses away from motorists who are found to have consumed more alcohol than permitted by legal limits, the BBC reported Friday.
The driver may then go before the transport department to appeal the decision.
Authorities said the new rules are part of an effort to improve safety in the city ahead of the Commonwealth Games, scheduled for next year.
Police said about 70 percent of India's annual 130,000 road fatalities are alcohol-related.
