JERUSALEM, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Israel's chief Ashkenazi rabbi criticized religious leaders Wednesday who oppose exchanging captured Palestinians for kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Rabbi Yona Metzger held a meeting with Shalit's parents, Noam and Aviva, The Jerusalem Post reported. The Shalits said they fear religious division if an exchange takes place.

"The Shalits expressed concern that if Gilad is released in exchange for hundreds of terrorists, it will cause a backlash of hatred and infighting," a Metzger spokesman said. "The chief rabbi agreed to help."

The opposition to an exchange has come from a group of rabbis calling themselves The Way of Faith. They said Jewish law bans putting Jewish lives at risk by releasing terrorists.

Metzger's spokesman said the rabbi believes the group is behaving "irresponsibly."

Shalit, 23, was captured in June 2006 in a raid from Gaza into southern Israel.
