TRIPOLI, Libya, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has agreed to mediate a football dispute between Algeria and Egypt, the Libyan government announced.

The government's official news agency says Gadhafi was asked to play the role of mediator by Arab League chief Amr Musa, The BBC reports.

Each county has accused the other's fans of violent attacks after the Nov. 18 World Cup playoff game that Algeria won 1-0 over Egypt.

Algeria's Interior Minister Yazid Zerhouni has accused Egyptian authorities of failing to provide players with adequate protection.

Egypt has accused Algerian authorities of orchestrating a campaign of violence against football fans.

"As chairman of the African Union, the Guide of the Revolution (Gadhafi) is going to work to bridge the gulf that has opened up between Egypt and Algeria," the Libyan government said
