KIEV, Ukraine, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko says early elections are one option for breaking through what he sees as "stagnation" in parliament.
"We have the parliament without majority and stagnation of the government in which half of the seats are empty," Yushchenko said this week.
Yushchenko said the other most-plausible option would be a move by the deputies to install a new premier while maintaining the current makeup of parliament.
Russia's Itar-Tass news agency said Wednesday that Yushchenko vowed that any action he takes will be within the authority of Ukraine's constitution and will be carried out in a way that preserves democracy.
The next presidential election is scheduled for January 17, 2010. A total of 18 candidates were registered by the Nov. 6 deadline.
