BELGRADE, Serbia, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Parliamentarians from Serbia, Croatia and Macedonia gathered in Belgrade Monday to discuss their aspirations to join the European Union, observers said.
Attending the conference will be European Parliament rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin and European Community Director for Western Balkans Pierre Mirel, the Serbian news Web site B92 reported.
Hosting the affair is Laslo Varga, chairman of the Serbian Parliament European Integrations Committee. He told B92 one of the topics will be why Kacin believes it is unrealistic for Serbia to submit a petition for EU candidacy this year.
Varga said the parliamentarians will try to make a good impression on the EU and EP officials "because they are the politicians in the union who decide on candidatures," and added Serbia could use the gathering as a chance to learn from Croatia and Macedonia, whose EU bids are further along.
