RAMAPO, N.Y., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- An anchor for the New York City cable news channel NY1 has been found guilty of an attempted assault on his wife at their home north of the city.

Dominic Carter, 45, was acquitted of third-degree assault Friday in Ramapo Town Justice Court, The New York Times reported. He could be sentenced to three months in jail and a year on probation for attempted assault, the district attorney said.

A spokeswoman for NY1 said after the verdict the station is "reviewing the court's decision." Carter had been on an indefinite leave of absence.

Carter's wife, Marilyn, had told police her husband attacked her Oct. 22 when they began arguing about medical care for an epileptic son. On the witness stand, she changed her story, blaming the assault on an unnamed day laborer.

Carter joined NY1 in 1992 after working as a radio reporter. He has moderated the political discussion shows "The Road to City Hall" and "Inside City Hall" and moderated debates between candidates for mayor of New York City and governor of New York State.
