Jews try restoring Joseph's Tomb presence

NABLUS, Israel, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- An Israeli group said it will garner public support and organize a march to a West Bank town to re-establish a Jewish presence at the Joseph's Tomb compound.

The group's move follows security improvements that led to the army's removal of roadblocks to several West Bank towns, including at an entrance to Nablus, (Shechem, in Hebrew), the Jerusalem Post reported Thursday.

The group, Gar'in Shechem, is composed of residents of Judea and Samaria, including rabbis and settler leaders.

"It is already nine years since Joseph's Tomb was burned, plundered and abandoned. It's time to remove the shame," a Gar'in Shechem flier said.

"There is no longer a security hindrance. This is Israeli territory according to every law and we intend to return there at any cost, organizers said.

Israel withdrew from the tomb in Oct. 2000 after a gun battle in which six Arabs and Israeli Border Police Cpl. Madhat Yusef were killed, the Jerusalem Post said.
