BASRA, Iraq, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki stopped a Qatari prince from hunting in Iraq despite his having received permission to do so in advance, Azzaman reported.
The Iraqi newspaper said Sunday that Sheik Jaber al-Khalifa al-Thani of Qatar was recently turned back at the Iraqi city of Basra after Maliki overturned approval for the prince's hunting trip given by Iraq's ministries of interior and foreign affairs.
The reasoning for Maliki's decision regarding the prince's hunting trip remains unclear, as Iraqi government officials offered no comments on the matter, the report said.
Azzaman said the Iraqi desert to the west of Baghdad is a popular hunting ground among royalty from the Persian Gulf region. The Iraqi desert area is currently enjoying moderate temperatures and longer nights.
