PRISTINA, Kosovo, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- The first elections in Kosovo since it declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 went off without any real trouble, security officials said Monday.
Kosovo's prime minister, Hassim Thaci, called Sunday "the most important day for the citizens of Kosovo since proclaiming of (its) independence," the Serbian newspaper Blic reported Monday.
Security officials said only a few instances of graffiti at some polling places were reported.
Monitors sent by the European Parliament said participation by Serbs in the election was "impressive," despite the Serbian government calling on Serbs living in Kosovo to stay home, the Belgrade newspaper said.
"We do not recognize a single decree passed by institutions of the so-called Republic of Kosovo but there shall be no repercussions for the citizens of Serbia that went to the polls and voted" in three Serb-majority communities or elsewhere in Kosovo, Serbia Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said.
