Group backs disputed Honduran president

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A world federation of political parties says it backs the president of Honduras even though most of the international community does not recognize his status.

The group of liberal and democratic parties, Liberal International, has named Roberto Micheletti as a vice president of the organization, it said Monday.

Micheletti was made caretaker president of Honduras in June after the removal of elected president Manuel Zelaya by the Honduran military. The United Nations has condemned the ousting of Zelaya as a coup.

Honduras has announced new elections for Nov. 29. The international community says it will not acknowledge the vote unless Zelaya is returned to office, south Atlantic news agency Merco Press reported.

Liberal International met with both Micheletti and Zelaya in Honduras and said "both signified to be willing to discuss the political situation in their country with each other." Zelaya also said he would consider accepting the results of the upcoming presidential election, federation president Hans Van Baalen said.
