Improper disposal caused arms blast

ULYANOVSK, Russia, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- A fatal fire at a weapons depot in Ulyanovsk, Russia, was caused by the improper disposal of ammunition, authorities said Sunday.

Friday night's fire killed two people, injured at least a dozen others and damaged the homes of more than 100 residents of the city, RIA Novosti reported.

The explosion occurred at an ammunition disposal site and not in the ammunition storage facility itself, Russian Navy Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky said Sunday. An estimated 40 metric tons of artillery shells exploded, he said.

Those responsible for the explosion had yet to be identified, Vysotsky said.

The explosion prompted Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to order a safety review of all the nation's weapons depots. Medvedev issued the order from Singapore Saturday where he was attending an Asian-Pacific summit.
