TAGAJO, Japan, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Archaeologists said they discovered the remains of an artificial pond in Japan's Miyagi Prefecture that dates back to the late 8th or late 9th century.
The Mainichi Daily News said Sunday the artificial pond was part of an ornamental garden in the city of Tagajo amid the ruins of Taga Castle, which once served as the capital of Japan's Tohoku region.
Archaeologists said the pond was created by a wood and stone dike and measures 426 feet by 328 feet.
The Mainichi Daily News said it appears the dike was created through the use of earth to support a wooden fence. The ancient structure was then laden on top with paving stones.
