SEOUL, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- North Korea said Friday it wanted an apology from South Korea for firing at a patrol boat, setting it on fire.
Local media said one North Korean sailor was killed and three wounded, The Washington Post reported.
A protest from the head of the North Korean military promised any future violations of the border between the two countries' territorial waters would be met with "merciless" force, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The two Koreas disagree on the location of the border. The South accepts the Northern Limit Line, while the North says that line was drawn unilaterally in 1953 by the U.S. commander of U.N. forces and that the boundary is an extension of the land border.
No South Korean vessels suffered serious damage in the brief naval battle Tuesday. South Korea says a Northern patrol boat crossed the line and fired on a South Korean speedboat, ignoring warning shots, while the North says South Korean vessels intruded into its waters.
