BRUSSELS, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves says he is a candidate for one of the new European Union posts created under the Lisbon Treaty.
The centrist Social Democrat and former member of the Estonian Parliament says he is interested in both the European Council presidency and that of the high representative for foreign affairs, the EUobserver reported Friday.
Ilves issued a thinly veiled hint that Eastern Europe should get at least one of the two new posts.
In a statement released by his office, Ilves said the election of the two new posts should be "based on the internal coherence of the European Union and the principle of equality."
Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, announced Wednesday that leaders will choose the candidates during a dinner summit in Brussels on November 19.
