VICTORIA, British Columbia, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- A Canadian man born without hands and convicted of being a heroin courier was sentenced to serve his sentence at his home in British Columbia.
Terry Bazzani, 39, pleaded guilty Sept. 2 to importing heroin after his arrest getting off a flight from Colombia in Toronto in 2006. He had swallowed 85 pellets of heroin worth more than $200,000, the Victoria (British Columbia) Times-Colonist reported.
Prosecutors asked for a 3-to-5 year sentence, but Justice Keith Bracken sided with the defense in that Bazzani's multiple disabilities would make him a target in prison and he wouldn't receive the care he needs.
Bazzani was born without hands, shortened arms, a partial left foot that's fused and a concave chest. He told court his mother used drugs when she was pregnant.
His defense lawyer said during a five-week stay in a Toronto-area prison after his arrest, no-one fed Bazzani or brushed his teeth.
His home sentence comes with curfews, an order to avoid alcohol and drugs and a 10-year weapons prohibition, the report said.
