MONTREAL, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old girl was killed and seven minors were injured, one critically, when two vehicles carrying a total of 12 people collided, Montreal police said.

The 14-year-old girl was riding with another passenger in the open trunk of a sedan that collided with a larger vehicle, then ran off the road and down the bank of the Richelieu River about 3 a.m. Sunday, The (Montreal) Gazette reported.

A 15-year-old boy who was riding in the larger vehicle was reported in critical condition. Five minors were riding in that car, the newspaper said.

Charges of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing an accident have been filed against the drivers of both cars -- who are both 17. The driver of the smaller vehicle was also charged with criminal negligence, police said.

Investigators say excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.
