GRIMSBY, Ontario, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A 9-year-old Canadian boy, a passenger in his mother's car, took over the wheel when she blacked out, Ontario police said.

The 43-year-old Milton, Ontario, woman lost consciousness because of a medical condition while driving on the Queen Elizabeth Way highway in Grimsby, Ontario, the Toronto Star reported Sunday.

The car continued to accelerate, but her son switched off the ignition and steered it onto the shoulder of the road. The car came to a stop in a ditch, the newspaper reported.

The boy was not hurt, but his mother was in a life-threatening condition due to her medical status, the Star said.
