LISBON, Portugal, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John McCain's 97-year-old mother was hospitalized after falling in a Lisbon street during a trip to Portugal, a spokeswoman said Friday.

Brooke Buchanan, a member of McCain's staff, said the Arizona senator had spoken to his mother, Roberta, and to her doctors at San Jose Hospital in Lisbon, CNN reported.

Roberta McCain, a vigorous woman, actively campaigned for her son during last year's presidential race. McCain, 73, suggested his mother's abilities showed he was not too old to be president.

Dr. Fatima Palmero, one of the doctors treating Roberta McCain, said she was in stable condition and being held for observation. Palmero would not say when she was likely to be released.

Roberta McCain fainted, Buchanan said, hitting her head as she fell.
