PRISTINA, Kosovo, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- At least 15 Kosovo Albanians drowned while trying to illegally cross a river into Hungary from Serbia, Kosovo's Foreign Affairs Ministry said Thursday.
The boating accident occurred between Oct. 14 and 16 in the Tisa River, separating Subotica in Serbia from Szeged in Hungary, the ministry said.
A man and two children survived after the boat carrying 18 or 19 people sank, Hungarian television station TV2 reported.
The man, Argon Rama, a Kosovo Albanian, was arrested in Hungary following the incident, the Gazeta Express, published in the Kosovo capital, Pristina, reported.
Rama said he was able to save his children, but his wife had died in the accident, Serbian public broadcaster RTS reported.
Kosovo's ambassador to Austria went to Hungary Thursday to discuss the incident with officials, Kosovo government spokeswoman Albana Beqiri said.
She added contact had been made with Kosovo citizens ''who are believed to have family members among those who died in the tragedy."
Albania, to the southwest, borders Kosovo, Serbia's southern province, which has declared its independence.
