KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, Kosovo, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Electric power was restored Wednesday to several thousand Serbs in Kosovo who were cut off after a billing dispute, officials said.

The residents said they were denied power after they refused to pay their bills to the Kosovo Electric Corp., demanding instead to pay them to the Serbian electricity system. The news Web site B92 reported power was restored after the Serbian firm intervened.

The Web site said the cut-off affected the city of Kosovska Mitrovica and all of northern Kosovo, including 4,000 patients at a hospital there.

It quoted District Governor Radenko Nedeljkovic as dismissing claims by Kosovo Electric Corp. officials that the power cut had been due to a fault with the power lines, saying the move was instead politically motivated.
