Turkish station raided in charity probe

ISTANBUL, Turkey, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Police in Poland raided a TV station Friday as part of an investigation into what prosecutors call one of the biggest fraud cases in German history.

The police said they raided the offices of private channel Kanal 7 in Istanbul and seized documents, examined financial records and computers and copied computer hard drives, the Hurriyet Daily News reported.

Police are to turn over seized documents to the Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office, which is investigating the German organization Deniz Feneri, which had billed itself as a charity. Prosecutors say Deniz Feneri had collected about $23 million from Turkish immigrants who thought the money would be used in their homeland.

No one was detained Friday.

Kanal 7 management confirmed the raid but said the station would continue broadcasting.

Two Turks living in Germany were sentenced to prison last year in the Deniz Feneri case.

Mehmet Gurhan was sentenced to five years and 10 months and Mehmet Taskan two years and nine months. Firdevsi Emis, a third defendant, got a suspended sentence of one year and 10 months.

The Daily News said a Polish charity named Deniz Feneri is not connected to the German one.
