Ingushetia in the North Caucusus is bounded by Chechnya, North Ossetia and Georgia. The region is one of the poorest parts of Russia and has been politically restive since it was created when the Soviet Union collapsed.

The operation ended in the village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya near the Chechen border. Police said two pistols, an assault rifle, a grenade launcher and ammunition were seized.

Earlier this week, two Russian security agents and six militants were killed in another raid.
