RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia says one of its security officers was killed this week in a gun battle with suspected al-Qaida militants at the Yemeni border.
Two militants died and a third was arrested in the shootout at a border checkpoint in Jazan province, officials said. Authorities believe the militants were on a suicide-bombing mission at an unknown location in the Kingdom, The National reported Tuesday.
The officer was shot when he stopped a vehicle carrying three suspects, including two men dressed in women's clothing that concealed explosive belts.
Officials have seen an increase in arrests of al-Qaida suspects that they say is apparently the work of al-Qaida terrorists who had fled to Yemen in 2006 trying to return to Saudi Arabia.
