Canadian gets terror risk label lifted

MONTREAL, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A Moroccan-born Canadian said he was pleased with a federal judge's ruling Wednesday removing a government document labeling him a terror risk.

Judge Danielle Tremblay-Lamer tossed the security certificate that had dogged Adil Charkaoui the past six years and denied a government request to appeal. However, the judge said Charkaoui would have to go to court separately if he desires to sue the government, Canwest News Service reported.

Charkaoui indicated while he was happy with the ruling, it isn't enough.

"But, and there is always a but, I want the government to apologize and compensate me for all the years I didn't work, couldn't travel and the damage this information did to my reputation," Canwest quoted him as saying.

After his arrest in 2003, the father of three was held for almost two years before being released under virtual house arrest. He and his lawyers were never presented the evidence against him, the news service said.
