Yemen urges residents to flee rebels

SANA'A, Yemen, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Intensified fighting in Yemen's northern provinces has prompted officials in Sana'a to urge residents to flee to refugee camps, official media reported Tuesday.

The news agency SABA said the Yemeni government has set up four refugee camps and has established safe corridors to them as clashes between the army and Shiite rebels heat up.

It quoted a spokesman for Yemen's Supreme Security Committee as urging residents of certain districts in the northern governorates of Amran and Saada to seek shelter at the camps. But the committee also said the Houthi rebels were blocking some refugees and were using them as human shields.

Yemeni officials told SABA the rebels were planting landmines in the roads to block humanitarian aid from reaching the displaced people.
