Shantytown fire leaves 1,000 homeless

SAO PAULO, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Nearly 1,000 people lost their homes and four were overwhelmed by smoke when a fire raced through a shantytown in Sao Paulo, Brazil, fire officials said.

About 350 families lost their homes in less than three hours, EFE, the Spanish news agency, reported Tuesday.

EFE did not report any deaths because of the fire.

The blaze began Sunday afternoon and involved at least 70 firefighters, officials said.

Sao Paulo state police said they are investigating the fire.
